Is 1-1 Net Metering Protected In Your State?
If you live in Florida, One kilowatt hour (kwh) of power produced and sent to the grid yields one kwh credit. One kilowatt of power drawn from or claimed from the grid reduces your credits by one kwh. This is known as 1-1 net-metering. Many states protect net-metering credits or other forms of compensation for solar power sent to the grid, however this is fairly inconsistent and worthy of legislative protections.
So how does it work?
In high sunlight times, houses with solar produce more energy than they need. This excess power is sent to the grid, and the homeowner is credited for that power. When that home needs to draw power from the grid, say for instance during nighttime hours, those credits can be claimed by way of power back from the grid. At the end of the year, excess credits can roll over — or a check from the power company may be claimed.
What states offer net metering and/or compensation?
In states such as Florida, 1–1 Net Metering programs have been protected. In others, the redemtions are not as substantial. But Net Metering is a good way to balance out power production versus power usage, and supplement any battery storage that homeowner may or may not have available coupled with their solar panels and inverters.
